R.I.P My Telly

Yesterday while I was watching Oz my telly started crackling and the screen went weird. There was a mingy frazzled smell so I suppose it’s kaput. This could be considered a bad thing but.. Finland is going digital next month and that telly was too old for a digi box anyway (no scart socket). I was planning on not getting a digi box anyway cos I resent having to pay a tv license. In fact I hate it so much that I’m willing to live without tv. This could be a positive thing.. I can get my homework done instead of watching the SImpsons. Then again I might be so bored I’ll pull my hair out. Watch this space..

Wippies!

I got my laptop 5 months ago and since I have a laptop I traded in all my cables for a wireless router. The problem was that I didn’t really have much choice when it came down to routers cos they’re all well over-priced here. So I got myself a Philips one that came with a USB stick so the desktop could connect. After fiddling round a lot I got wireless working and it worked on the desktop when it felt like it. Sometimes the router goes funky and I have to unplug and replug a few times before it displays the wireless network. It bugs me. So after a tip-off from a friend I went and checked out >>Wippies and they sent me a nice homebox.
The box was very easy to install, just stick the ADSL cable into the back and give it a while to sync data, then there were three wireless networks coming out of it, my personal home wifi network, a public wi-fi network and a weird third one that has something to do with mobile phones.. My personal network was easy to setup, I just went into the mywippies pages and changed the details there i.e setup my password and network name. The public one (well not really public but public for Wippies users) displays a nice login screen if anyone connects and the best bit is.. even if someone does connect to my network they won’t be able to interfere with my traffic. I did a speed test and my speeds are the same as they ever were. I guess if someone connects then it’ll go down, but I’m not too worried since I live in the sticks.
One thing that really interested me is that the back of the box has USB ports. Apparantly they’re working on a printer server which means I’ll be able to simply plug my printer into the back and use it as a network printer. That’ll be nifty ;) So far this has been a positive experience and it looks like it’ll get even better. Instead of running two boxes I now run one, and I provide a service to those poor peeps who are travelling around a bit and just want a place to send email from.

There’s a first time for almost everything..

Today was the first time I’ve ever left negative feedback for someone on Ebay. I guess on the whole I’ve been quite lucky, nothing had ever been lost in the post until this one item.. Buffy (season 2). Perhaps I wouldn’t have been so peeved about it if I hadn’t been looking forward to watching it so much. So I sat there.. waiting for my Buffy to arrive and it didn’t. Weeks and weeks passed, so I got in contact with the seller who just said that it was posted ages ago (that was all he said). So I mailed back and said well I guess the post office has lost it and blah blah so I asked him which address he’d sent it to in case there was a mistake and also how much the postage was and he said “I sent it to the address on record and I don’t remember how much the postage was but it wasn’t the cheapest!” Well I might be on my moral high-horse here but aren’t sellers supposed to keep track of these things? Also is it really my fault the postage wasn’t cheap since he was selling it to anyone in Europe? Another one.. shouldn’t he offer proof of postage?? On his feedback are a couple of other not received items and 5 mutually withdrawn, it makes me suspicious.
So since he didn’t reply to my final email and I gave him enough time to respond I decided it’s time to put some bad feedback. Now I wonder whether he’ll leave negative on mine just to get his own back.. it wouldn’t shock me he seemed quite petty. Ebay buggers..

In other news.. I got my moped license! Yayyyy.. only problem now is that I have no moped and they’re really bloody expensive. Wonderful eh? I was on a scooter today and it was ace. Sounds like a hairdryer but nevermind.. it’d get me where I needed to go.. if I only had my own one.

My Harry Potter was dispatched on the 20th according to Amazon which means.. it should arrive this week! I’m still on Order of the Phoenix so I’d better get reading.. In fact.. I think I’ll go do that now. Thanks for reading all this crap ;P

What are you doing till the final Harry Potter?

I just had a look at my calendar.. 5 days till the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I guess it’ll be about 10 days till I receive my pre-ordered copy from Amazon (with any luck). So the question is.. what will you be doing till then? My plan goes as follows..

Re-read all the Harry Potter books.
Study for my moped exam which is on Friday.
Work on the site for Virgin Dream (the band I’m in).
Try not to get too impatient waiting for the book.

I hope it’s big and thick.. that’ll keep me busy for a few days. I have to know.. I have to know.. I just have to know what’s going to happen. I started the Philosopher’s Stone this morning.. almost done.

New Host

Hello there,

Hmmm that looks like the start of a very bad letter.. so since I’ve started that way, might as well do it that way:

Dear Mr. Hosting,

I’ve decided to change you cos I like control.. lots of control over.. everything really. So I have decided to *gasp* pay (actually pay) for hosting. So I’ll be leaving you.. and going on to something with a control panel and a 99% uptime guarantee with all kinds of user friendly things and a support team who’ll do as I say as soon as possible cos they’re paid. This letter sounds cruel but it’s not really.. our time spent together has been marvellous, a real learning curve, and a free learning curve too! So thank you for taking the time to set up and fix this server and for letting me free-load ;)

So.. the site will be moving, provided the new host doesn’t turn out to be bloody awful. There shouldn’t be any interference that you’ll notice.. so it’s actually useless me telling you.. so that’s that.

11th July 2007
Mwahahaha you hardly noticed a thing! Except that the download links weren’t working.. they are now. For some reason this host wants their .htaccess in a particular way. Possibly just a correct way. Apart from that I think the transition wen’t quite smoothly :)
