Pee pee and a bit more pee.

Well we’ve had an addition to the family, a male Norwegian Elk Hound. He’s 3 and a half and outwardly appears calm and collected. I’m suspecting it’s not really the case though as he’s having real trouble with marking and peeing inside the house. He actually seems to be holding in his pee until he’s unable to hold it in anymore and goes inside even though he’s just been outside.

He’s suffering from separation anxiety as well and barks for ages when we leave. The poor wee bugger was kept outside pretty much his whole life in a pen in the back yard. It’s difficult to know whether he has a urine infection.. is just having some trouble settling down.. has never been house trained or all of the above, so for now I’m keeping him on a flexilead beside me so I can monitor him at all times. It only takes a second for him to pee on the couch. Constant vigilance! As my old professor would say hah.

Anyhoo am now trawling through episodes of the dog whisperer online to see if there’s an episode that seems to fit the profile of our poor wee dog. Hopefully I can find something that will help him and in turn will help us. It’s the most frustrating thing in the world trying to teach a dog not to pee inside when he’s been doing it for three and a half years without anyone teaching him not to. Am sure he’ll get it though… just got to find the right method.

Newts

I started off with three Chinese Fire-Bellied Newts and after a few months they started laying eggs. That was a year and a half ago. There are still 14 baby newts remaining. Unfortunately I lost my adult male Fernando in January 2012. The baby newts are still for sale but I’m picky about who gets them since the pet store managed to kill seven of them. Some news have been re-homed and are doing well. If you live in Finland and are interested in the newts you can contact me on Facebook or Twitter or here.

Tortuga and Toby

Tortuga is a 10 year old female Russian tortoise and Toby is about eight years old. We had Tortuga first and she mostly liked sleeping and eating. We got Toby from a family who had some young children and from the first moment he’s been running around snapping at everyones feet and fingers and trying to get it on with Tortuga. He’s a bit aggressive but he also likes having his head rubbed. We had two habitats (one for each tortoise since they’re not social animals) but they seemed to get along quite well and even have some touching moments when Toby puts his head on Tortugas shell and they both sleep like that.

Devi and Sparticus

Sparticus (olive coloured) and Devi are two budgies that we got at seperate times. First off we had Budgie and then got Devi as a companion to him. They were both the same colour of green and you could tell them apart by the fact that Budgie made a lot of noise and Devi was the strong silent type. Budgie died and we had to get another budgie for him for company to try and stop him from pegging it. The two of them get along quite well but have their tiffs and aren’t nearly as close and cuddly as Budgie and Devi were.

Fish

I set up the fish tank about two years ago and have been very lucky in keeping my fish alive. Most losses so far have been due to the wee fish being eaten or the big ones dying of old age. I enjoy buying plants and ornaments for the tank and sometimes it’s more fun and relaxing just sitting and watching the tank than sitting at my computer or watching telly.

The Admiral

The oldest fish in the tank is Admiral Ackbar. He’s a Black Moor. In January 2012 we noticed his eye filling with blood and a bit later it’s swollen and nasty. We’ve put medicine in the tank and there’s nothing to do but wait and see if he’ll make it. Will be a sad day when the Admiral goes.

Ensign Nelson

Nelson was brought home on the 14th of January 2012. One day Nelson will be an Admiral but at the moment he’s just a wee toot and has trouble keeping up with the other goldfish. One problem I’ve read about with Black Moor’s is that some of them are under-developed and their fins can’t really propel them very well. I’m hoping that now he’s here his swimming abilities will improve.

Midas I and II

These guys are big goldfish and are notorious for eating the smaller fish. One day I was cleaning out the tanks and made the mistake of putting some neon tetras in the same holding tank, when I went to put them back in their own tank one tetra was missing. These two also stuffed themselves silly with the Admiral when I was culling the crayfish.

Molly

A black molly that’s been in the tank since I set it up a couple of years ago. Molly is quite social and especially likes stalking Nelson.

Big Boo

A huge sucker-fish that likes to hide during the day.

Little Boo

Another sucker-fish. When we got him he was tiny and was in the baby tank cleaning up the mess, now he’s huge and sometimes gets into fights with Big Boo. These fish are very territorial.

The Snake-Fish

There are three long fish in the tank. They look like snakes but I have no idea what their official name is.

The Rest

A few neon tetras, a red platty (his pal was eaten the same night they were put in the tank :/) and a couple of bottom feeders fill up the rest of the tank. It’s too difficult naming all the small fish because when they get eaten or die (which is often) it’s a wrench.

Charlie

The first time I met Charlie was when I was in the pet shop looking for some food for the newts. When I went in the pet section I heard a wolf-whistle which reminded of my uncles cockatiel. I thought someone was bound to buy him since he was such a sweet wee thing but a month later he was still there so I had to take him home. The woman in the pet shop said that Charlie had been left in an office block and they were going in to feed him once a week so the police phoned in the pet shop. Charlie was very deprived of company and depressed but he cheered up once he got in with some other cockatiels. Once he got home here he started immediately showing off and enjoyed boogying to 60′s pop and rap music. He’s also a fan of whistling but gets very angry if you whistle at him because he likes to be top noise-maker in this house. Other nicknames for Charlie are Charles (when he’s bad) and Woody Woodpecker (when he starts rattling the bars of his cage).

Scamp

Scamp was born on the 2nd of July 2004 and we went to pick him up when he was eight weeks old. His mum was used for hunting and his dad was a show dog so Scamp doesn’t have any papers, made no difference to us though.
