So you’ve dished out your hard-earned cash and hired me to create/modify a plugin for you. That’s really rather cool of you to support poor wee developers like me. Without people who are willing to pay for services and code, us nerds would be in a pitiful position and would end up resorting to some harebrained ideas of our own :/ never a good idea… that being said (i.e THANKYOU! :), here’s how you can keep your plugin maintained and what to do if problems occur.
WordPress upgrades
As you may or may not know WordPress upgrades frequently. If I had to keep re-doing all the code I’ve ever done for people everytime this happened I’d be on my deathbed with a laptop tap tap tapping away, I might end up doing that anyway.. but that’s beside the point. I’m going to use a real-life example. In March 2010 our car started acting all wonky, wouldn’t accelerate properly and sounded like a Hummer which is amazing since it’s a Nissan Micra, anyhoo we took it to get fixed and 150 euro, a new exhaust and a few days later we had a working car. A week after that the same problem started happening so we took it to get repaired and 200 euro later we had a new clutch installed and the car was working fine. He could not predict that the clutch couldn’t handle the revs once a new exhaust was fitted and we still payed the 200 euro even though he had just repaired it. It’s not fair to assume that he’d fix it for free since it certainly wasn’t his fault. The same principle applies here. I’m more than willing to maintain/update/upgrade your plugin if after a WordPress upgrade it suddenly stops working, but it’s ridiculous to assume I’ll do it for free.
Bugs
Bugs are when something doesn’t work the way it should or the way you thought it did. Sometimes they appear after you’ve done something different but most of the time they creep up when you least expect it, evil beasties. Bugs creep into every aspect of computer life and are unavoidable sometimes. I will fix any bugs found free of charge but I retain the right to decide whether something is a bug or whether you’re just trying to get me to change the code for free (you stingy git) ;).
I hope you have a long and happy life with your custom plugin. Please don’t hestitate to contact me at the address above if you are having difficulties and I’ll do my best to resolve them in a way that’s suitable for all. Thank you again,
Harley
