Creating RWX Objects

This article is not meant to be a comprehensive guide to RWX object creation, it is simply an article which I hope will get you started. At the bottom of this page is a link to where you can contact me if you have any questions. I’ll try my best to answer your question(s).

What are RWX objects?

RWX objects are 3D models created using the scripting code RWX. There are many different kinds of software which use these models including chat programs, (Outerworlds, Activeworlds) and many different games. In Outerworlds you can create avatars and 3D objects ranging from apples to zebras, the possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

What can I do with RWX?

Well if you own your own world in Outerworlds or Activeworlds you can create objects that are unlike anything else anyone else has in their worlds. People will gape in awe at your life-sized replication of the Sphinx, or your fully detailed TV cabinet.

Software

There are three main programs you can use to create your RWX objects;

Notepad
Modeller
Truespace

There are of course other programs for creating but these are the only ones I’ve had some experience with.

Notepad

Many great object builders can create objects with nothing more than a piece of graph paper and notepad. This is really getting into the nitty gritty of RWX design. It’s a good place to start because once you have the basics of designing it’ll be easier to move onto other programs so you can work faster. For a really great tutorial on writing RWX code see this tutorial. Grover also wrote a really good tutorial that seems to be the undisputed champion of all RWX tutorials. Every time I try to access the page however, it seems to be down.

Modeller

Modeller is an object viewing and editing program. You can get the program for free by visiting http://www.rwmodeler.com. When I first downloaded this program I couldn’t get it to work because it was missing some DLL files. These are the DLL files I found lurking around on someone’s site and they work with my version of Modeler 1.2. At the moment I only retexture with Modeller because I haven’t found a decent tutorial to teach me how to do other things.

Truespace

Unfortunatly Truespace isn’t free and the COB models that come out need to be optimized for use in 3D worlds. Once you’re done optimizing you also need to convert the COB file to RWX using a small program like Cobdump . For a tutorial on using cobdump have a look here.

Good Luck!

I hope this page has given you some kind of idea where to start on your path to object creation masterdom. If you have any questions you can contact me and I’ll try to reply as soon as possible. Have fun!
