Author Advertising Plugin
For Wordpress 2.5
This plugin allows blog admins to create a revenue sharing program utilising one of the many advertising programs out there i.e Yahoo, Google Adsense, Amazon, Allposters etc. It can also be used as a banner manager, author photo/website widgets.. actually it has about a zillion uses. Give it a try and lemme know if you use it for anything really groovy.
Read the FAQ Author Advertising Plugin FAQ for more detailed information on how to use this plugin.
Admin has complete control over…
The percentage of author’s ads to admin ad’s.
The user level that an author has to be before they get to participate in the revenue sharing program
Whether to randomise author ads on the front page of the blog.
The page that authors see before entering their publisher id.
Custom fields where you can collect additional information from your authors and display it.
The positioning and content of ads.
Up to three Author Advertising widgets.
Authors publisher ID’s, and other custom information (you can edit and delete an author’s advertising entries)
Installation
- 1. Disable your Author Advertising/Adsense plugin (if any). If you’ve used this plugin before version 2.5 of Wordpress then you’ll need to delete your author_advertising table. You could always export the publisher information and import again using phpMyAdmin. You could also simply add two new columns to the table author_custom1 (text) and author_custom2 (text) and delete the kd_author_advertising option in the wp_options table.
- 2. Upload author-advertising.php into your Wordpress plugins folder.
- 3. Activate the plugin from your admin plugins menu.
- 4. Change the admin options from Settings > Author Advertising Config.
- 5. You can also modify author settings from Users > Author Advertising
Compatibility
This plugin is for Wordpress 2.5. Anything lower and all the admin pages will look as if they fell from the ugly tree and hit every branch. You should always use the latest version anyway ;P.
Many themes don’t support the automatic ad-placement that’s used in this plugin. To get around this simply disable the ads and use the included funtion in your theme or the tags in your post. Placement problems are due to the themes not the plugin.. (plugin works fine with default and classic themes ;)

Thanks for this Harley. I look forward to implementing the new version of the plugin.
Can we use the new AdSense code yet? Or do we still have to use the old code?

Hiya Bill, yep you can use the new code but bear in mind that then you’ll be allowing authors to enter their slot id which means they can change the colours of the ads. To get it working with adsense, the publisher ID is as usual and the slot ID will be one of the custom fields. Then you simply put those into your advert templates.

Thanks. Given that I might try to keep the old code where I can. I can just imagine how messy the ads could get…
We’re looking at doing a site redesign and I don’t know where to get the old code from for different ads to replace the ones already on the site. Any ideas?

Wish I could help but I’ve had trouble finding the old ad style too, that’s why I figured it was best to make a generic advertising plugin and ditch the adsense bit of it. It depends on what kind of authors you have I guess. In the ad code you have a definition for size as well so really all that could be messed up is the colours and if you have trustworthy authors then they’ll want to comply with your TOS where you could say ‘No loud advertising colours’ or something to that effect. It’s a pickle for adsense publishers :)

Hello,
is there a simple way not to show Ads on homepage?
I’d prefer to show them only in the full article layout.
thank you

Hi there. I have a question about the author’s ads. I am the admin and have placed my adsense codes and my publisher ID in the setting page. I know that authors have to input their publisher ID and I’d like to know if they have to input their adsense codes as well.
Thanks

Hi Harley. For some reason, when I activate Ad Place 1 or 2, the ad shows up not only in the post but also in the “Latest Posts” (Ad Place 1) or “Latest Comments” (Ad Place 2). Any idea what might be going on there?

I have been thinking about it for a while, and I reckon that you can get a lot of the old AdSense code by downloading “Adsense Ready” Wordpress themes. Most of them already have the Adsense in, you just need to change the publisher code.
Here is a page with 18 Adsense Ready Wordpress Templates.
I reckon that you can probably pull the code out of some of those if you find one to match what you are looking for.

Do you have to have them enter their slot ID for it to work with the new code? You can’t just have all of your info with their publisher ID?

Yes for the plugin to work with the new Google Adsense code they will have to put in a slot id. Google requires a slot id to be put in alongside the publisher ID. The old ad format didn’t even have a slot ID. There’s nothing I can do about that I’m afraid.. maybe if I was CEO of Google. The plugin changed from Author Adsense to Author Advertising simply because Google were being too strict about ad format.

Thanks for the link Bill, I guess which code you use depends on what kind of authors you have and also how long Google will continue to support the old ad format.

DavidM, Sounds like your theme is a bit funky. Sometimes themes have hooks where there shouldn’t be and hooks are what this (and most plugins) use to insert/change content. Could you tell me which theme you’re using or perhaps you could send it to me so I can have a look at it. To stop this behaviour you can disable automatic ad placement and use the function instead.
